About the Program
The picturesque campus of NUI Galway is over 160 years old and is a short 15-minute walk to the center of Galway. Tulane students will directly enroll at the university, select courses to take alongside degree-seeking students taught by local faculty and be immersed in Irish culture. NUI Galway provides incredible opportunities to take courses on Irish history, language and culture in addition to courses within your major field of study, helping you deeply understand your new home.
 
Originally incorporated in 1845, NUI Galway’s student population is now over 17,000, approximately 12% of which is international! The university is known for its innovative research in nanotechnology, human settlement and historical change, and also provides the opportunity for you to study Celtic civilization from a variety of academic perspectives. NUI Galway’s location provides many chances for students to enjoy kayaking or rowing on the River Corrib, wind surfing in Salthill, and mountaineering and hiking in the mountains of Connemara.

Galway, a harbor city on Ireland’s west coast, is widely recognized as the cultural capital of Ireland, due to the many festivals and holidays that are celebrated in the city each year. These include the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Cuirt International Festival of Literature and the Galway Comedy Festival, just to name a few. Galway is known as a college town, with over approximately 20% of the population being made up of students. This demographic contributes to Galway’s identity as a young, vibrant and cosmopolitan city. Galway is an important tourist point, serving as the gateway to various scenic areas of Ireland, such as the mountain ranges of the Twelve Bens and the Maamturks, the picturesque islands that dot the coast and the gorgeous lakes and beaches throughout the country as well. The city itself is home to the many artisans, musicians and culture-bearers that represent the distinct cultural history and diversity of the country.

Academic Culture
As a Visiting Student, you can create your own individual study program from the wide range of classes (modules) available from NUI’s regular degree courses, to meet your own major or minor requirements, subject to meeting the normal prerequisites. While you can expect to find courses that meet your needs and interests within the fields of study listed below, the exact courses that are available each year are published just prior to the start of classes. This year’s courses are available for review here.
 
You can expect to take 5 - 7 classes (modules) per semester. This equates to approximately 30 ECTS credits, which is a normal course load for NUI Galway students per semester. Classes are generally delivered through lectures, which are normally held in large or medium sized lecture halls and which provide the foundations on which students are expected to explore further through independent reading. Lectures are also usually supplemented by smaller tutorials or seminar classes, which provide an opportunity for discussion in a smaller group setting.
 
Visiting students are examined alongside our full time degree-seeking students. Most classes are examined by end of semester examination, however most also include mid-term assignments and/or continuous assessment. Visiting students are able to review previous years’ exams in order to better prepare for the types of assessments that will take place at NUI Galway.

Student Life
National University of Ireland Galway offers a robust study abroad program, complete with the support and guidance necessary to help Tulane students transition to life abroad. NUI Galway’s International Office offers support all the way from the time of your application, through your arrival and integration on campus. The orientation program will help you acclimate to life on campus as you finalize the selection of your course modules.
 
Once the semester gets going, you will have access to the over 150 sports clubs and student societies run by NUI, through which you can meet locals, build friendships and improve your talents. If you’ve been inspired by your experiences through Tulane’s service-minded community, you can pick that up by participating in ALIVE, NUI’s student volunteering program. The NUI Galway Student Union is the center of these activities, and provides ample opportunities to engage in student life, as well as access support services, such as health promotion and academic guidance.
 
Housing
The University offers a wide range of residential accommodation, ranging from modern self-catering apartments through to traditional collegiate-style halls of residence with meal plans. All students are can work with the NUI Galway Accommodation Office to search for their preferred place to live.

Living in a student residence can give you the opportunity to meet new, local friends. More independently-minded students may prefer to find private accommodation in an apartment, flat or house. The Accommodation Office will provide guidance no matter which category you find yourself in.
