About the Program
INSTEP provides academic semester and summer study abroad experiences that develop a contemporary European perspective on economics, business, politics, law, communications/media, and international relations. Classes are taught in small groups of students in traditionally British seminars or supervisions for which students can receive credit towards their degree at their home US university or college. With distinguished British faculty and committed staff on both sides of the Atlantic, INSTEP provides a well structured, challenging educational environment for motivated students with interests in the majors listed below as well as students interested in the liberal arts. Students may also participate in an internship experience to round out the professional aspect of the social science or humanities degree.

London, England
Studying political economy in London, a hub for the arts, education, finance, and more, is a no-brainer. With a population of more than 8 million, London, the capital of both England and the United Kingdom, is a true cosmopolitan melting pot known for its theater, entertainment, fashion, history, pubs, museums and markets. As Carl Gobey said, "Everything is here – different nationalities, different people, different styles and fashions. Anything you want to be, any life you want to lead: You can find it."

One of the world's largest financial centers, London houses the headquarters of most of the UK's top 100 listed companies and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest companies. London boasts four World Heritage Sites - the Tower of London, the historic settlement of Greenwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and the area comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church. Spend a semester in London studying political science and political economy. The INSTEP London program is designed to integrate the study of these disciplines with specially related coursework.

Academic Culture
The INSTEP London semester programs offer a cross-disciplinary approach in which central themes are examined from the areas of business, political economy, international relations, politics, media and communications, and law.  This approach allows the broader issues underlying the course of Western thought for more than a century to be studied and critically evaluated.

Academics in London give you the option of choosing between two tracks: the Courses Only track or the Directed Research and Methodology track.

The Courses Only track allows students to enroll in courses consisting of groups of 5-12 INSTEP students interacting in a weekly lecture/discussion format along with the British faculty member.  Students register for a total of 15 semester hours of credit, with each seminar worth three semester hours of credit.

The Directed Research and Methodology track allows students to define and apply a wide range of re-search methods and techniques to a self-defined directed research project in Politics, and Communications.  A core requirement of the Directed Research Track involves the specific academic focus and is conducted under the supervision of a faculty member.  It is expected that students will take at least one complementary elective relevant to the topic they plan to explore.
During the semester, you must register for a full credit load which allows you to register for five seminars. After successfully completing the semester, you will receive 15 semester credits.

Student Life
Students choosing to live in London need to be prepared for an exciting and somewhat hectic large city lifestyle. You will find that even the largest London universities don't have 'campuses' as you are used to in the US; students tend to live all around the city and commute, via the Underground and buses, to their courses. In essence, London will be your campus. As an INSTEP student, you will live in carefully chosen housing in central London. You will be in easy commuting distance to the INSTEP office and classrooms, as well as to all that London has to offer. The London Underground (subway) and the famous red London buses are staples of London university life, as all urban students commute to class by way of these famous public transportation systems.
At INSTEP we believe that a high level of student services is as important to a successful study abroad experience as well has a quality academic experience. It is for this reason that we have put in place the following student services that each student can expect from the time of initial contact until after you return to the United States following your program.
  • Dedicated Office and Program Staff in the US
  • Pre-Departure Mailings and Advice (both academic and social)
  • Help with booking Transatlantic flight student fares
  • Dedicated on--site staff in London and Cambridge
  • On-site Orientation upon arrival in the UK
  • On-site academic support and advising
  • Library, computing and e-mail facilities
  • Receptions, dinners, and group photographs

Housing in London is tailored to cater for each particular group of students, but in all cases is centrally located with easy access to public transport links to the INSTEP classroom, administrative office, and the various entertainments and famous sights of the West End.

The housing itself consists of shared rooms (singles are rarely available) in self-catering apartments that include shared lounge, kitchen, and bathroom facilities. Kitchens are fully fitted, bedclothes and linen are provided (students need only bring their own towels), and the apartments are cleaned regularly. These apartments are within town houses or apartment blocks; they are well appointed, and located in safe, quiet neighborhoods.
