About the Program
Leiden University College is the residential honors college of Leiden University. Located in the Hague, LUC offers an innovating and cutting edge Liberal Arts and Sciences program in the heart of Europe’s city of Peace and Justice. Tulane students will directly enroll in courses at LUC. LUC offers Major tracks, such as World Politics; Earth, Energy and Sustainability; and Global Public Health. Study abroad students may select courses within these tracks and supplement them with courses in other fields of study as well.

The Hague, located less than an hour south of Amsterdam, is a bustling city of just over 500,000 people. Home to the U.N.’s International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, among many other international organizations and non-profits, the Hague is the ideal place to study for students interested in transnational issues in a number of disciplines, including Public Health, International Development and Environmental Studies. LUC incorporates the key themes of the Hague into its academic program, meaning that students will be able to take advantage of everything that being situated in “The International City of Peace and Justice” has to offer. Through field trips, guest lectures and other experiential learning opportunities, the city’s numerous NGO’s, international organizations and research institutes play a substantial role in educating LUC’s students.

Tulane students who study at Leiden University College The Hague enroll in LUC’s English-language honors undergraduate program in Liberal Arts & Sciences. LUC's focus on Global Challenges employs a thematic approach to the majors. Important Global Challenges like climate change, depletion of natural resources, poverty, social injustice, global health, international crime and terrorism are our fields of expertise. LUC has adopted the extensive socio-cultural and academic domain of Global Challenges as its unique selling point, the defining element in its curriculum. At LUC, interdisciplinary exchange is a vital element of learning.

Study abroad students at Leiden University College The Hague take a semester’s course load over two blocks. LUC The Hague courses are typically valued at 5 credits (EC) and are usually completed in one block of eight weeks. The estimated workload is 52 hours per week, including 12-14 contact hours.

The Hague is the international city of peace and justice, home to many international organizations, embassies and multinational corporations but also a fun student city. With the many international students The Hague attracts it offers a vibrant community of young diverse people. This city by the sea has a lively beach boulevard, many bars, cafés and museums. Visiting LUC students may make use of the different study areas and libraries in the city such as the Peace Palace library, the Royal Library and various university buildings in The Hague. As Tulane students are directly enrolled in courses at LUC, they will be surrounded by a truly diverse, international student body. As a residential college, LUC programs many of the activities in the same spaces where you will take classes.
This program provides various activities and programs to help integrate you into the local and university communities.
Some opportunities are built into the program, such as:

- seminar sessions with distinguished speakers and scholars
- meetings with large ethnic communities in The Hague and Amsterdam
Additional opportunities are available for students to deepen their immersion:Students often need to seek out opportunities beyond program offerings to deepen their immersion and make local connections.
If space is available, students live in the LUC Hague building at Anna van Buerenplein. This is the same facility where classes are taught and many of the student-centered activities take place. Some students will live in apartments or student residences throughout the Hague. In both cases, students have full access to the LUC Hague Building, other Leiden University facilities in the Hague and Leiden University facilities in Leiden proper.
