Summer in Argentina
Spanish Language and Urban Culture
Buenos Aires, Argentina
July 9 – August 11, 2018

The Stone Center for Latin American Studies is offering this exciting five-week program in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through the Universidad de San Andrés. Explore the second-largest metropolis in South America while earning six credits in courses on Argentine history, literature, and popular culture. Stay with Argentine families and improve your conversational skills in Spanish. Participate in a tango dance class, attend a folkloric dance show, go on a graffiti tour, and experience other exciting cultural activities within and around the city.
Students will take two courses taught in Spanish and can receive credit depending on the level they need. Hispanic Cities, taught by Tulane faculty Professor Antonio Gómez and offered as either SPAN 3350 or SPAN 4510, will explore the rich and complex urban zone of one of the most important cities in Latin America and the American hemisphere, using materials from literature, art, cinema, music, and other sources. Students will examine Buenos Aires in terms of its history and present, focusing on its relationship with the rest of the country, South America, Latin America, and the United States. Spanish through Pop Culture, taught by UdeSA faculty and offered as either SPAN 2040 or SPAN 3280, will cover a variety of topics in Argentine culture through a historical and artistic context. Students will develop skills for comparative analysis in Spanish language while increasing their knowledge of Argentine culture and the country.
